Many of you know that I’m the son of Dr. Henry Heimlich, who invented the Heimlich Maneuver in 1974. Today is Dad’s 90th birthday.
Norman Vincent Peale once described my father as having saved more lives than any person alive today. It’s estimated that over 50,000 people have been saved using the Heimlich Maneuver. But there is more to Dad’s life than just that. Read the full story

During the GOP rebuttal following the State of the Union, Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell said “most Americans do not want to turn over the best medical care system in the world to the federal government,” a theme Republicans have repeated many times.
Is US health care the best in the world? No, it isn’t. Read the full story

Forget about patriotism. Listen to what Senator Judd Gregg said after Congress voted down the fiscal commission he and Sen. Kent Conrad proposed: America is going broke.
With $56.4 trillion in unfunded obligations in 2008 — including $36.3 trillion for Medicare, $6.6 trillion for Social Security and $13.5 trillion for the national debt, retirement benefits and other liabilities — the burden comes to $184,000 per person and $483,000 per household. Jean, believe me, I’m not saying this because we were once competitors for your congressional seat, but this has got to stop. It’s embarrassing to see you on national TV camping out like a star-struck teenager to get an aisle seat for the State of the Union, then hustling up to President Obama to grab his signature. Please. I don’t recall Rob Portman ever groveling for autographs. Tom Luken reportedly hurled five pound paperweights at his aides but nothing this degrading. You’re supposed to be in DC formulating legislation to reduce the deficit, ease the tax burden and cut red tape, not starting a fan club.
I understand you used the opportunity to pester Obama about a federal loan guarantee for the uranium plant in Piketon, though I doubt that’s high on his checklist. In either case, getting more pork for the district is the kind of self-serving behavior that’s put this country in its worst fiscal hole in history.
Jean, most of us suspect our representatives in Congress aren’t doing anything worthwhile, but please don’t make it so obvious.
